Vaccination rollout strategy

Momentum Metropolitan has lent its hand in the fight against COVID-19 through its healthcare businesses and vaccination sites. Although co-ordinating a vaccination rollout programme of this magnitude was complex, we remained committed to a successful rollout and getting people vaccinated as soon as possible. We opened vaccination sites across the country that were open to the public.

Phase 1

Vaccination of frontline healthcare workers started in February 2021, with roughly 400 000 of an estimated 1 250 000 having been inoculated to date.

Phase 2

Vaccination of people 60 years and older, persons in congregated settings, and those with co-morbidities, started on 17 May 2021. From 1 July 2021 Phase 2 was expanded to include individuals 50 years and older, the remainder of healthcare workers and teachers. Individuals over 35 years started receiving their vaccines from 1 August.

Phase 3

Anyone aged 18 years and older can register on the EVDS portal and are eligible for their vaccines. Book a slot for your vaccination at a vaccination site.

  • Your medical aid information (if you have medical aid)
  • Proof of employment (e.g. access card) for health care workers

How to register for the vaccination

Everyone, including individuals with private healthcare cover, need to register on the Governement’s Electronic Vaccine Data System (EVDS) before receiving the vaccine. Healthcare workers and all people 35 years and older who haven’t yet registered are encouraged to do so as soon as possible. Registering is easy and can be done in any one of the following ways:

  1. EVDS

Online on the Electronic Vaccine Data System (EVDS). Using any device with internet access such as your cell phone or laptop, go to https://vaccine.enroll.health.gov.za/#/ and follow the prompts to register for the vaccine.

  2. WhatsApp

Send the word REGISTER to 0600 123 456. Follow the instructions and enter all the information that is requested. You will need your identity number (South African identity number, passport number, asylum seeker number or refugee number). Enter your location (home or work). If you’re a member of a medical aid you will need your medical aid name and number.

  3. SMS

You can dial *134*832*IDNumber#. For no ID number, dial *134*832#. Free on all South African mobile networks.

  4. Telephone

    Call the COVID-19 hotline on 0800 029 999.

Once you've registered on the EVDS system, you’ll receive an SMS confirming your registration. You’ll be issued with a vaccine code and information on when and where to go for your vaccination. Please note that you will not be able to receive your vaccination without the vaccine code.
