Our sustainability approach

Momentum Metropolitan Holdings is a company that enables businesses and people from all walks of life to achieve their financial goals and life aspirations. This vision combined with our values guide everything we do, including our contribution towards good sustainability practices. Our values of accountability, integrity and innovation mean that we take ownership for our responsibilities, our actions and their results, that we believe in doing what is right, and that we challenge ourselves to change the world for the better.

As part of our overall commitment to good sustainability principles, we strive to be financially sound, socially responsible as well as environmentally friendly, with good corporate governance as the overarching principle. In our Code of Ethics, we specify that we respect the world we operate in and are committed to improving the well-being of its societies by designing sustainable products and introducing sustainable services that will fulfil the needs of our stakeholders.

Our commitment to the SDGs

The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a people-centered set of goals and targets. Their aim is to achieve sustainable development by eradicating poverty, protecting the planet from degradation, and ensuring that all human beings can enjoy prosperous and fulfilling lives in harmony with nature. While some of the SDG targets require governments to act, there is still a lot we can do as a corporate to contribute to their achievement. Through discussion at various leadership forums, Momentum Metropolitan has identified five SDGs on which we have a direct impact.

The FTSE/JSE Responsible Investment Index

Momentum Metropolitan is listed on the FTSE/JSE Responsible Investment Index, which acknowledges our ESG achievements. In addition to this, the global index company FTSE Group confirms that we have been independently assessed according to the FTSE4Good criteria, and have satisfied the requirements to become a constituent of the FTSE4Good Index Series. FTSE4Good is an equity index series that is designed to facilitate investment in companies that meet globally recognised corporate responsibility standards. Companies in the FTSE4Good Index Series have met stringent ESG criteria and are positioned to capitalise on the benefits of responsible business practice.

Sustainability governance

The Group Finance Director is responsibility for the sustainability department which looks after climate-related issues. Final accountability rests with the board and its committees, including the executive committees. The Group Executive Committee, which performs a management review function for sustainability initiatives, raises relevant issues with the following committees of the board: audit, fair practices, risk and compliance, social ethics and transformation.

Fast facts

We achieved Level 1 B-BBEE rating for the 5th consecutive year.

Over the past 12 months we provided financial education to 8099 learners and young adults.

Our CSI focus is on youth employment. Over the past 18 months we have placed 927 people in jobs.

In F2019 we invested R2.1 billion in renewable energy.

Last 12 months we spent R176 million on skills development initiatives.

Through Enterprise and Supplier Development (ESD), we invested R80 million including industry initiatives, creating over 1000 new jobs.
